Reidsville: Mr. A. Burnelle “Pop” Cook, 93, of Reidsville passed on Monday, December 2nd, 2013 at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County.
Burnelle was born on May 12th, 1920 in Rockingham County to the late George Thomas and Mamie Strader Cook. He was a graduate of Reidsville High School, where he played baseball and football. He excelled in football, and as a lineman and place kicker, he played on the 1938 State Championship team. Jelly, as he was known, was one of the first from Reidsville to play in the Shrine Bowl. He served in the United States Navy and retired after forty-four years of service from the American Tobacco Company. Burnelle was a life-long member of First Baptist Church, where served as a Sunday School teacher, chairman of the deacon board, and greatly enjoyed serving as a church greeter. He will miss his hugs, especially from Rhonda. He loved playing golf and played until May of this year.
He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-three years, Maryann Meador Cook and his son, George Warren Cook.
Survivors include two sons, Charles “Ceedy” Cook and his wife, Janet; Tony Cook and wife Donna all of Reidsville; his grandchildren: Andrea Paul and husband, Keith; Eric Cook and wife Christy; Alex Cook and wife, Keeva; Brad Cook and wife Crystal; Greg Cook and wife, Holly; his great-grandchildren: Owen, Andrew, Addison and Kylee.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 5th, 2013 at 11 AM at Wilkerson Funeral Home. Dr. Bill Duke and Rev. Dave Huggins will officiate. Interment will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at 1535 W. Harrison Street.
