Carlton also loved nature and doing anything outdoors. He was once an active member of the Men’s Garden Club, where he spent many hours using his talent to grow and maintain their rose garden as well as his own roses. He later became a member of the Reidsville Appearance Commission, where he continued his work to help beautify the town he loved. He was also an active member of the Rockingham County Beekeepers Association, sharing his knowledge and love for beekeeping with others.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise Johnson, and his brother, Donald Johnson.
