Reidsville: Alvin H. "Spud" Barrett, 77, of 645 Oregon Hill Road, died peacefully at home on Saturday, August 1, 2009 where he was a resident for more than 55 years. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 3, 2009 2:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph Clayton officiating. The burial will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens. The pallbearers will be Ron Bray, Jeremy Strader, Donnie Strader, E.C. Mabe, Gary Barrett and Javier Garcia. Mr. Barrett was born in Rockingham County to the late Henry Harrison and Truddie Shelton Barrett. After serving his country as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg during the Korean Conflict, Alvin settled in the Oregon Hill community. Later he worked for the State of North Carolina Department of Transportation and farmed for several years before retiring to enjoy growing tomatoes and playing with he "Gran" pup Peanut. Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Earl and Orvice "0.E." Barrett and his sister, Rachel Barrett Hilton. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Evans Barrett of the home and two daughters, Debbie Strader and husband, Donnie of Ruffin and Donna Faye Barrett and Mr. E. C. Mabe of Raleigh. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Jeremy Strader and Haley Strader Bray and husband, Ron; a brother Jerome Barrett and wife, Barbara in Kennesaw, GA, along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends, Sunday, August 2, from 6-8:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at his home.
