Anita Hall Powell went home peacefully to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 surrounded by her family. Born December 31, 1929, she was the devoted wife of Dillard M. Powell for 62 years, the mother of three children and the grandmother of nine. She commented during her recent illness that she had led a blessed life during her 80 years.
Anita was a resident of Cary for 43 years and a former resident of the Happy Home community in Ruffin, NC where she was a very active member of Happy Home Congregational Christian Church. She was a gifted seamstress, enjoyed crafts, gardening and flowers, and was a wonderful cook. She began oil painting in later life and created multiple landscapes and still-life. She and her husband spent over two months at Topsail Island this past summer enjoying the beach.
Before a 19-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Anita enjoyed traveling with her husband to Brazil, the Holy Land, and made several trips to the Soviet Union, Germany and throughout Europe. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and her laugh. Anita was a member of White Plains United Methodist Church, the Susannah Circle and the Pathfinders Sunday School class.
She is survived by her husband, Dillard M. Powell; her three children, Marcia and husband, Dennis Pitts of Cary; Judy Wood of Williamsburg, VA and John and wife, Kim Powell of Cary. She was the grandmother to nine grandchildren - Alan and Lindsay Pitts, Cary; Bryan Wood, Washington, DC; Stephen Wood, Madison, WI; Michael Wood, Williamsburg, VA; and Grant, Katherine, Matthew and Kendall Powell of Cary. She is also survived by two brothers, Clay Hall of Virginia Beach, VA and James Hall of Tiverton, RI. She was predeceased by her parents, Ed and Jennie Hall, and three sisters.
Visitation will be at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Maynard Road in Cary on Thursday, September 9, from 6 - 8 PM. The local funeral service will be held in Cary at White Plains United Methodist Church on Friday, September 10, at 11AM. A funeral will be held at Happy Home Congregational Christian Church in Ruffin, NC at 1PM on Saturday, September 11, followed by the burial in the family mausoleum crypt in the church cemetery.
