Anne London French, of Eden, passed away peacefully from her earthly life on Sunday, March 26, 2023, at Penn Nursing Center with family by her side.
Anne was born on June 25, 1931, the youngest of three children of the late Harvey William London and Eva Mills London. Anne was preceded in death by her loving husband of 70 years, Charles Lester French; her brother William (Bill) London and sister Edna Angle Tarkenton, sister-in-law Lorene London, and brothers-in-law Clarence Angle and William (Bill) Tarkenton, and niece Amy Angle Coleman.
Anne was the mother of two sons, Charles Victor (Janet), and Timothy Alan (Wendy). Grandchildren include Joshua Alan French (Suzanne), Kayla French Cliffe, Adam Matthew French, and great grandson Avett Colson Cliffe, plus many nieces and nephews. Herbert London was always a special nephew.
Anne was the valedictorian of her graduation class at Ruffin High School. As a stay-at-home mom, she kept the home running smoothly, and excelled in her ability to handle multiple tasks, while helping raise two boys. Anne was well known as one of the best cooks in the community - especially for her desserts. She always loved working in her flowers and yard while still continuing her service to others.
She and her family accepted Christ in their lives in 1969 and joined Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church. She became an active member serving in many capacities, especially with the WMU (Women’s Missionary Union). She also ministered through the Eden Camp of Gideon International with her husband and the Women’s Auxiliary.
With Lester’s retirement from Duke Power in 1989, they became very active in volunteer work for the community and with Hospice. Anne was recognized as the Duke Energy, Rockingham Chapter, Retiree Volunteer of the year (2000-2001) for contributions to the community. In 2008, they were both recognized by Duke Energy, Rockingham Chapter, as Retiree Volunteers of the Year.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the loving care her daughter-in-law, Wendy French provided at home, and to Brookdale and Penn Nursing Centers for their assistance during Mema’s stay at their facilities.
Visitation will be held from 2-3 pm on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church followed by funeral services at 3pm with Rev. Harry Smith and Pastor Bill Mason officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ruffin Stacey Baptist Church, Gideon’s International, or Hospice of Rockingham County.
