Reidsville – Annie Lee Walker McAlister, 99, went to her heavenly home on May 28, 2016. Funeral services will be held at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Glenda Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery.
Annie Lee was born in the Williamsburg community of Rockingham County on November 21, 1916, the first of four daughters of Luther M. Walker and Annie Florence Walters Walker. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Reavely W. Williams and Emma W. Adams. Her sister, Evelyn W. Stone and her brother-in-law, Jerry Adams survive her.
On May 18, 1941, Annie Lee married Hunter I. McAlister, who died in 1969. She is
survived by three children, Maurice and wife, Paula, Terry and Sarah; grandchildren, Paige Griggs and husband, Mike and Jimmy McAlister and wife, Lydia; and great-grandchildren, Aubrie Leigh Griggs and Reagan Ann McAlister and extended family.
Annie Lee graduated from Reidsville High School in 1934 and was a Member of Lowe’s Methodist Church until after she married. She then joined Mt. Carmel Methodist Church where she was active in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
After high school, Annie Lee went to work at Newberry’s dime store and Strader’s Shoe Store. During the war, she worked at the American Tobacco Company. While at home with her children, Annie Lee would string tobacco and raise a vegetable garden every
summer. She canned and preserved fruits and vegetables from her garden while also enjoying her flowers and shrubs. Her winter hours were spent sewing and quilting. She made many of her own and her children’s clothes. While her children attended Sadler Elementary School, Annie Lee was an active member of the PTA and served on the local school board. Annie Lee returned to work at Strader’s Shoe Store in 1960 and retired in 1996 when she was 80 years old.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to all of Annie Lee’s excellent caregivers during the last five years. She was able to stay in her own home for the last 75 years.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at Wilkerson’s Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorial donations may be made to Mt. Carmel UMC, 361 Mt.
