REIDSVILLE: Bertha Van Metra Loftis Boyd, of Bradford Village West in Kernersville and formerly of Wentworth Street in Reidsville, 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph Clayton officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens. Bertha was born on December 5, 1918 in Rockingham County to the late Joe Loftis and Minnie Paschal Loftis. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker all of her life. Her hobbies included crafts, gardening and she was an expert seamstress. Bertha was a wonderful cook and loved cooking for her family and helping everyone. She married John Elbert Boyd of Reidsville on October 17 1936 and was preceded in death by her sons, Wayne and Mitchell Boyd; brothers, J.T. ,Vance and Melvin Loftis; sisters,Verlie Pryor, Hessie Barber, Gladys Myers. She is survived by her husband, John E Boyd; sons, Barney Boyd and wife, Nancy of Kernersville, James Boyd and wife, Jerrilyn of Owings, MD; daughters, Deborah Ferguson and husband, Jim of Annapolis, MD, Renee Rogers and husband, Mac of Centreville, MD; daughters-in-law, Montie Boyd of Kernersville and Jean Boyd of Federalsburg, MD; sister, Bailey Craddock of Reidsville; she was the proud grandmother of 12 grandchildren, Shannon Carroll, Sheilla Boyd, Shea Boyd, Michele Baker, Sherry Quate, Kim Collins, Tina Stokes, Keri Boyd, Jason Sheffey, Emily Ferguson, Lauren Emrick and John Emrick; 8 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Friday, July 24th from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103-3217.
