Ruffin – Charles “Pete” Herman Cox, 87, of 344 Goose Pond Road passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Morehead Hospital.Funeral services will be held 11:00AM Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Lee Eggers officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the Rockingham County Honor Guard.Mr. Cox was born in Rockingham County to the late James L. and Blanch Scott Cox. He served in the US Marines during WWII and was involved in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal. He was a retiree of P. Lorillard Tobacco Company and an active member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church serving as an usher for 23 years. Pete was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Leaksville Lodge # 136 AF & AM. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank and Elwood Cox and sister, Louise Suttle. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Katie Walker Cox; daughter, Kathy Hawks and husband, Robert; son, Charles L. Cox; grandson, Jonathan Hawks and sister-in-law, Barbara Fowble.The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Monday, November 30, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and other times the home.Memorial contributions may be sent to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church Regular Fund, c/o Barbara Fowble, 394 Goose Pond Road, Ruffin, North Carolina 27326
