Christine Elizabeth Sawyers Vernon

Christine Elizabeth Sawyers Vernon was born on August 24, 1929 to her loving parents, Samuel Martin Sawyers and Beatrice Hopkins Sawyers in Rockingham County, North Carolina. Christine’s long life saw her to the age of 92, where she passed away the evening of April 30, 2022. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren in these final moments.

In November of 1946 she married her husband, Otis L. Vernon Jr. and together they raised a family. Christine began working at Fieldcrest Mills and then at American Tobacco Company before retiring from Lorillard as a line attendant after 28 years of service. Throughout her life, she enjoyed listening to gospel music, diligently reading her bible, singing, crocheting, playing guitar and piano, and spending time with her family.

Many things can be said of Christine’s character and life, but most of all, she was a kind and passionate woman who loved God and her family more than anything else. Her family has taken great comfort by knowing that she has joined her many loved ones in Heaven and will forever be in our hearts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Otis L. Vernon Jr.; sisters, Gladys Odell, Virginia “Tince” Stratton and brother, Garvin “Bud” Sawyers.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathy Vernon Cable and husband Marvin; her son, Ernest Vernon and wife Erica; her seven grandchildren, Michael Cable and wife Karen, Ashley Vernon, Christine Foley, Brittney Vernon and fiancé Ryan, Mardea Tapley, Taylor Moffitt and husband Patt, and Devyn Vernon; her sixteen great-grandchildren; her sisters, Lilly Hill Taylor and Orene Martin and husband Hank; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the Hospice of Rockingham County for the care they provided to Christine, as well as the support and assistance they have extended to the family in these difficult times.

The funeral service will be held at Wilkerson Funeral Home at 2:00PM on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, with Pastor Ralph Clayton officiating the service. The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service and extended times at the home. The burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
