Brown Summit- Curtis Millard Vernon, 80, of 5557 Osceola-Ossipee Road, passed away Friday, October 14, 2011, at Moses Cone Hospital.A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2011 at 5:00 PM at Apple's Chapel Christian Church, with Rev. Allen Myers, III officiating. The Rockingham County Honor Guard will perform the military rites.Mr. Vernon was born in Bassett, Virginia to the late Henry Dolphus Vernon and Thelma Hudson Vernon. He was a member of Apple's Chapel Christian Church and a former trustee, a retiree of P. Lorillard Tobacco Company with 38 Years of service and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death of his wife, Betty Ruth Smith Vernon; brother, Roger Dale Vernon.He is survived by daughters, Gloria Vernon Sheetz and husband, Terry, Mona Vernon Truitt and husband, George; grandchildren, Chasity Little and husband, Richard, Casey England and husband, Neal, Carlee Wheatley and husband, 1st Lt. Patrick; great grandchildren, Macie Little, Dalton Little, Olivia England and Coleman Wheatley, brother, Harold Dean Vernon and sister, Thelma Jean Grose.The family will receive friends at the church from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M.on Monday prior to the service and other times at Mr. Vernon's home, 5557 Osceola-Ossipee Road, Brown Summit and the home of Virginia T.
