Greensboro: DeWitt Clinton Fillmore, 77, of 1 Regal Court, passedrnaway on Monday, August 18, 2008 at Golden Living Center at Starmount.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM,rnSaturday, August 23 at Forestrn Lawn Cemetery.rnThe family will receive friends Friday evening, August 22, at the residence fromrn6:00-8:00.
Mr. Fillmore was born in Presque Isle, Mainernon October 26, 1930, the son of the late Walter L. and Marion D. Fillmore. DeWitt’s life’s contributions to his family and the people of North Carolina consisted of being a pioneer of Southern Skiing and the founder of Edelweiss Ski Haus that began its business in 1969 at Banner Elk, North Carolina. Edelweiss had seven retail locations during his ownership – NC, KY, VA and WVA. Mr. Fillmore began his career with the prestigious accounting firm, A.M. Pullen & Company now McGladrey and Pullen, CPA’s before embarking on his businessrncareer – American Day School with its 26 day care schools located in NC, SC and GA; President of a property management and construction company; acting President of a carpet mill on the West Coast – commuting bi-weekly to Newport Beach, California; and later, Mr. Fillmore was one of the original shareholders of a ski resort in West Virginia – Snowshoe Company and later after selling hisrnski shops, became a Bankruptcy Trustee for the U.S. Bankruptcy Courts totally reviving two major North Carolina funeral homes that are still in business.
Mr. Fillmore served in the United States Marine Corpsrnduring the Korean War (not a “conflict” or “Police Action” as Truman would havernus call it…it was a WAR.)
He felt his greatest achievement was authoring of the four books – Reflections; From My Perspective; Snowshoe – A journey Through The Past; and History, Opinions and Wisdom.
Survivors include his wife, Ana “Anita” Terradas Fillmore of 40 years; his daughter, Jan and her husband, Les Wilmer of Charlottesville, VA and grandchildren, Cameron, Carson, Kennedy and Karaline Wilmer; his stepdaughter and her husband, Fred and Jennifer Massey andrntheir children, Sara, Allison and Alan; his stepdaughter and her husband, Kimrnand Charlie Michaux and their children, Jennifer and Lindsey of Greensboro; Anita’s sons Mark and Laura Miller and their daughter, Lauryn of Winston Salemrnand Wayne and Jennifer Miller and their children, Alyson and Matthew of Kernersville. Also surviving DeWitt is his brother and brother’s wife, Jerre N. and Bette Fillmore and sister, Addie Louise Fillmore Hoyt, both siblings from Danielson, CT; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Fillmore, also wanted Mr. and Mrs. Jeffrey “Jeff” Oleynik of Greensboro, Mr. And Mrs. Alan Evans of Roundup, Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Higgins of Presque Isle, Maine, and Kate Blackwell also of Maine – former high school classmates - the Bonner family of Aurora, NC, Mr. Steve Miller of Greensboro, NC and Michael Cohn of Greensboro, NC all be listed as very special friends.
Wilkerson Funeral Home at its Reidsville location is handling funeral arrangements and interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro and at his request, there will be NO religious services.
