Ernest Garland Shumate

Garland Shumate, 94, of 405 Farmington Drive, went home to be with The Lord Tuesday, July 5, 2016 at Penn Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, July 8, 2016 at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev. Dennis Shumate, Rev. Steve Shumate and Rev. Chris Shumate officiating. The burial will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery. Mr. Shumate was a native of Rockingham County and the son of the late, Ernest and Ruth Talley Shumate. He was a longtime and faithful member of Community Baptist Church serving in many different capacities over the years. He was a student of the Word and taught a special series on “The Tabernacle” at numerous churches. He later attended 1st Congregational Christian Church. He worked many years in agricultural sales. Mr. Shumate was an avid gardener and loved his family. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Millie Scott Shumate; 3 sisters and 4 brothers. Mr. Shumate is survived by his sons, Douglas Shumate and wife, Pat of Reidsville, Dennis Shumate and wife, Vickie of Greeneville, TN and Danny Shumate and wife, Annette of Greensboro; 4 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth Shumate of Reidsville and a large extended family. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Thursday, July 7, 2016 at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at Doug’s home (320 Farmington Drive).
