Greensboro – Ersie Lee Covington Johnson, born December 5, 1921, passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at Beacon Place in Greensboro. She spent many happy and prayerful years in support of her husband during his pastorship at Midway Baptist Church in Jamestown, Shady Grove Baptist Church in Troutman and Shining Light Baptist Church in Greensboro. Her late husband was the founding pastor of Shining Light Baptist Church. As a diligent prayer warrior, Mrs. Johnsons’ prayer opened the charter meeting of Shining Light Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson was born in Rockingham County to the late Flay Dewey and Pearl Easter Covington. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Walter “Bill” Franklin Johnson; infant son, Bobby Ray Johnson: sisters, Nonnie Smith, Daisy Shelton and Joy Paschal; brothers, Rev. James Covington and Tom Covington. Survivors include her children, Larry Johnson and wife, Hanna of Greensboro, Dee Don Johnson, Sr. and wife, Janie of Dugspur, Va., Cheryl Faye Foley and husband, Ron of Whitsett and Frankie Johnson and wife, Debbie of Hillsville, Va,; grandchildren, Ronny, Sandra, Siegfried, Holly (Darryl), Donald, Jr.(Deana), Brian (Pam), Rev. David (Teresa), Rusty (Kelli), Joey (Lindsay), Billy (Jennifer), Chandler and Chase; great grandchildren, Christopher, Jared, Kendra, Chandler, Noah, Micah, Luke, Jonah, Caleb Walter, Makinleigh, Makayleigh and Samuel; sisters, Ruby Stanley, Betty Gibson, Shirley Bame, Mary Gray Johnson and Bonnie Paschal. The family will receive friends at Brown Summit Baptist Church, 6000 Summit Ave, from 6-8 PM on Friday, July 5, 2013 and other times at the home of Larry Johnson. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Shining Light Baptist Church, 4530 West Wendover Ave. with Rev. Carl Shelton and Rev. David Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A special thanks to all the staff at Hospice of Greensboro and Beacon Place who made our mother more comfortable during her final journey.
