REIDSVILLE: Eugene “Shorty” Mason, of 1441 Woolen Store Road died Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, September 11, 2009, at Sharon Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Rockingham County Honor Guard. “Shorty” was born in Wilson County to the late Luther and Lillie Sullivan Mason. He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and adult Sunday School Class. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran stationed in Africa for 26 months. He moved to Burlington in 1940 where he worked for Burlington Mills; returned to Burlington after leaving the military and met his wife, Lucy. They married December 21, 1946 and moved to Reidsville in August of 1947. In 1967 he moved to the Sharon Community where he raised tobacco and grain and retired from American Tobacco Company after 31 years. He loved to fish and hunt; was a good husband and father and had many friends. He and Lucy did a lot of traveling to all 50 states. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 2 brothers. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lucy of the home; sons, Barry, Steve, and Tim Mason and wife, Karen; sister, Leacy Collins.The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Thursday, September 10 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.
