Exie Barker Gunn

Reidsville: Exie Barker Gunn, 87, of 778 County Home Road, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herb McClintick officiating. The burial will follow in the Wentworth United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Gunn was born in Guilford County to the late, Exton and Era Fountain Barker. She graduated from Mercy Hospital in Charlotte as a RN. Immediately after graduation, she worked for the Red Cross, serving as a Polio nurse in Greensboro, St. Louis, and Albuquerque. Later she served in general duty at the old Piedmont Hospital in Greensboro, NC. She worked as a private practice nurse and then served as the first school nurse for Rockingham County Schools. She finished her career working as a public health nurse for Rockingham County and retiring from Rowan County. Her faith was her passion and always put everyone before herself. She was a longtime and faithful member of Wentworth United Methodist Church. She was an active and charter member of North Star Chapter # 380, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Marsh. Mrs. Gunn is survived by her husband, Robert Calvin Gunn, Sr. of the home; her sons, Robert Calvin Gunn, JR and wife, Vickie, Alan Gunn and wife, Loretta, Carl Gunn and wife, Gay and Kelly Gunn and wife, Stacey; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. The family will receive friends from 7-9:00 PM Friday, August 9, 2013 at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
