REIDSVILLE- Gabrelle “Gaye” Anne Shumate Smith, 80, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013 at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale, NC. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, May 10th, 2013 at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Elder David Underwood officiating. The burial will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens. Gaye, a native of Rockingham County, was born September 7, 1932. She adored music, dancing, playing the piano, traveling and keeping a beautiful yard and garden. She was an inspector at Lorillard Tobacco Company for over 30 years and attended Lick Fork and Bush Arbor Primitive Baptist Churches. She was an inspiration of strength, grace and love to her family and friends and will be deeply missed. Gaye was preceded in death by her husband Jesse W. Smith, her parents John Earl Shumate, Sr. and Ollie Jo Wall Shumate, brother John Earl “Buster” Shumate, Jr., sister Lois Gilliam Shumate and daughter-in-law Deborah Smith. She is survived by her sons, James Keith Smith and wife, Sandra of Kingston Springs, TN, Joseph Timothy Smith of Reidsville, NC, Jeffrey Lee Smith and wife, Dale of Eden, NC; grandchildren, Ashleigh Thompson and husband, Matt of Memphis, TN, Amy Roethler of Dickson, TN, Meredith Brisson and husband, Tyler of Greensboro, NC, Peyton Smith of Reidsville, NC, Lauren Gwynn and husband, Justin of Reidsville, NC and Robbie Smith of Eden, NC; great grandchildren, Jacob, Aidan and Truman Thompson and Madelyn and Landon Roethler. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 9th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home at 8301 NC HWY 158, Reidsville, NC. The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to all the special people from Maxim Healthcare and Deonne Walker who cared for our mother at her home. We would also like to thank everyone at Countryside Manor for the exceptional care given during the last five months.
