Garry Lee Lynn

Garry Lynn went to be with the Lord on October 12, 2014 at 11:18 am. He passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side. His family knows he was met at the pearly gates with his new golden golf clubs and is now finally enjoying playing golf again. They also know he is up in heaven teaching everyone how to dance and shag. If you knew him you knew how much he loved golf and dancing. Garry was also known to people as the “Mayor of Wentworth”, “Mayor of Monroeton”, and Early Bird. He was given these names from friends that knew him throughout his life due to the fact that he knew everyone in Wentworth and Monroeton and everyone in those communities knew him. When Garry went out it was like he was running a political race the way he shook hands and spoke with everyone he came across. A Celebration of Life will be held at 6 pm, Thursday October 16th 2014 at Covington Wesleyan Church with Rev. Ralph Clayton officiating. Visitation will begin immediately following the service. Garry was born November 29, 1953 to Early and Shirley Lynn. He graduated from Reidsville Senior High School in 1972. He worked at Lorillard Tobacco Company where he retired after 30 years of service. He retired at the early age of 49 and was envied by all for having such an opportunity. After retiring he began working at Monroeton Golf Course where he enjoyed putting together tournaments, greeting golfers as they came through by saying “how can I help you my friend”, keeping the “boys” under control in the “clinic”, and he got to enjoy his favorite things to do while he worked which was socialize with people and be at the golf course. Garry was preceded in death by his father Early Garrett Lynn. He is survived by his loving wife Vicki, mother Shirley Lee Lynn , brother Mike Lynn and wife Annette, daughter Christie Lynn Guill and husband Dennis, grandson Zack Guill, nephews Matthew Lynn and wife Terry, nephew Jordan Lynn and wife Samantha, great nephews Carter Lynn and Auborn Lynn, Sister-in-law Lisa Heffinger, Sister-in-law Sharon Dickens and husband Craig, nephew Ryne Dickens and niece Drew Dickens, Brother-in-law Randy Heffinger, nieces Carly Heffinger, Jade Boyd, and Melodie Heffinger, Father-in-law Frank Heffinger and wife Annette, Mother-in-law Rhonda Heffinger, Aunts Nell Washburn, Louise Jeffreys, Cora Hudson, Linda Norman and husband Mike, Uncle Billy Lee and wife Barbara, Uncle Robert Joyce and a very large extended family of wonderful cousins. Garry was a devoted son and loved and adored his mother Shirley very much. With the passing of his father Early at an early age, Garry and Mike both stepped in to take care of her. Garry made sure his mother knew he was only a phone call away for whatever she needed. He was sure to call her or stop by to check on her to make sure she had what she needed or to make sure her car or air conditioner were working properly…..LOL. Garry was a loving brother to Mike Lynn aka “bro”. While growing up their mother never thought through all the fights and battles that they would have ever been as close to each other as they were but you will never find a closer sibling relationship than the one they shared. He was an excellent caregiver to Garry and would come and sit with him several days a week. He was a wonderful support system for Vicki so that she had someone there to help her. He was her “Angel” in time of need. Garry was a loving father and friend to his daughter Christie. He was always there for her whether it was just to talk or for advice. She was his pride and joy and light of his life until his precious grandson Zack came along…LOL. Zack became the star that shined a little brighter than hers but they both shined brightly within his heart. He thought of and called them daily and always wanted to know what was going on in their lives. He never missed events that Christie was involved in while she was growing up and never missed one for Zack. He was their biggest fan and made sure they both knew that. Zack was Garry’s “Most Valuable Player” and even presented him with a trophy that said that. Garry was Christie’s hero and she cherished her father/daughter relationship that they shared. He taught her to be the person she is today and respected him greatly for the man, father, and Papa he was. And lastly, the love of his life, his wife of 34 years and sweetie of 36 years, Vicki Heffinger Lynn. He was fortunate to have married a “younger” woman as all his friends accused him of robbing the cradle. He always told everyone at work he found some dumb country girl on the riverbanks in Eden fishing for supper, and they believed him, until they met her. I’m sure they thought “who else would have married him?” They realized early on that they fit, they were made for each other, loved the same things and loved to dance. He had a happy soul. They spent so many fun nights closing down Daddy Jacks. They also enjoyed their 20+ years as members of Steppin’ Out Shag Club in Eden, all the fun trips to SOS, and parties visiting many shag clubs up and down the coast. They have so many memories with their wonderful Shag family and friends with whom they laughed, sang, danced and loved and will cherish forever. They have supported, sustained, uplifted, and prayed with them and for them. Without them, she would not have made it. No more words can express the depth of loss. In lieu of flowers, we implore everyone to donate to Hospice of Rockingham County. The care we received was the most wonderful experience during this whole process. They are dedicated thoughtful and loving, and I don’t know how they do what they do. Of course, they all became attached to Garry. Special thanks to our caregivers Tomi, Otellia, and Bonnie. And lastly, our utmost appreciation to Dr. Ken Karb who called Garry to ask permission to take care of him. He visited often, called for updates and told him how much he loved his friend and would take special care of him.
