Ruffin – George D. Cox, Sr., 85, of 7538 NC Hwy 700, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at Hospice of Rockingham County.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 2, 2018, at Happy Home Church with Rev. Bruce McBride officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Cox was born on March 30, 1932, in Rockingham County to the late Robert Henry Cox and Dora Carroll Cox. He graduated from Ruffin High School in 1950. George served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He retired in 1998 as a Masonry Contractor. He was a deacon and a long time and faithful member of Happy Home Church. He loved to play music especially his harmonica giving joy to others. He competed in and enjoyed the Old Time Fiddler Convention in Galax. He was a checker enthusiast. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Lois Cain Cox; his son, George D. Cox II; his brother, Fred Cox; two sisters, Vivian Cox Riddle and Hilda Hundley and a son-in-law, Hugh Wyndham.
Survivors include his children, Karen Cox Wyndham of Brown Summit, Randall Cox and wife, Kim of Summerfield, Greg Cox and wife, Amber of Greensboro; daughter-in-law, Faye Cox of Summerfield; grandchildren, Randall Cox, Jr., Krystal Butler and husband, Cory, Masza Kinney, Shea Plott and husband Joe, Braden Cox, Avery Cox, Lawson Cox and London Abernathy; great grandchildren, Nathan Kinney, Aubrianah McLain and Joshua Plott; sisters, Lois Gentry, Kitty Dyer, Betty Collie and Coleen Austin and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Happy Home Church on Thursday, March 1, from 6-8 P.M., and the family will be at the home on Thursday at noon.
