Glynn Dillard Lawrence

Reidsville: Glynn Dillard Lawrence, passed into the presence of his Lord, Monday, February 8, 2016. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., Friday, February 12, 2016 at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Glenda Bennett and Rev. John Burton officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel UMC Cemetery with a reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. Papa Glynn or Doc, as he was called by many of those who knew him, lived a full life devoted to his wife, family, friends, church and community. Glynn was the son of the late John and Mary Lawrence of Ruffin. He was one of eight children: Thomas Lawrence (deceased), Ray Lawrence (deceased), Eva Lawrence (deceased), Ray Lawrence (deceased), Eva Lawrence Chrismon (deceased), Dewey Lawrence, Edrie Lawrence Strader, Odell Lawrence and Elmer Lawrence. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Strader Lawrence, his children Barry Lawrence and wife Benita, Glynda Sackfield and her husband Mark, and Angela Martin and her husband Tim. He was blessed with six grandchildren: Mark Sackfield II, Cindy Lawrence Barr, Bryan Lawrence, Christy Sackfield Hill, Jessica Martin Spohr and Savannah Martin. He had seven great-grandchildren: Zoe Sackfield, Nathan Sackfield, Joe Sackfield, Alex Barr, Abby Barr, Jake Hill and Dayne Hill. Glynn was a graduate of Ruffin High School in 1951. After graduation, Glynn used his talent for problem solving and mechanics to eventually own his own business in Ruffin, “Lawrence Garage.” It was under this roof that he earned the nickname “Doc,” because there wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix, modify or create. He ran this garage in Ruffin for approximately 40 years. Dad was a faithful member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church for 63 years. He was active in church and participated throughout the years in many capacities. He and Mom served for many years as the Youth Leaders, sung in the choir his entire life, taught Sunday School, spoke as a Lay Leader and was always willing to serve in any capacity he could be of service. Dad served as a Gideon for many years in the Reidsville Chapter, helping to spread God’s Word all over the world. As a devoted community member, Dad was a Charter Member of the Oregon Hill Fire Department serving 20 years. During his lifetime, Dad lived out the quote that stayed taped to his bathroom mirror, “What you are speaks so loud, I cannot hear what you say” (Thomas Jefferson). He lived his faith loud, looked for adventure and thrill in life, and loved those who knew him to the fullest. After Dad’s diagnosis, he was asked the question, “Do you have any regrets?” He never hesitated in saying “No.” Glynn, Doc, Dad, Papa Glynn … whatever you called him … he was loved. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 11, 2016 from 6-8 P.M. at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorial donations may be made to the Mount Carmel UMC – Glynn Lawrence Memorial Fund, at 361 Mt. Carmel Church Road, Reidsville, NC 27320.
