Reidsville: Hazel Southard Smith, 78, formerly of 127 Cortez Lane, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at Morehead Nursing Center. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev. Dave Gilbert and Rev. Kenneth Boaz officiating. The pallbearers will be Joe Tilley, Bryan Smith, James DeLancey, Rick Clark, Larry Boaz and Tommy Boaz. The interment will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born in Rockingham County to the late John Willie and Mattie Scott Southard. She was retired from Chase Bag Company and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Carol Smith; her sisters, Ruby Neal, Evelyn Wall, Mozelle Holland, and Viola Carroll; and her brother, Grady Franklin Southard. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Smith Simpson and husband, Nathan of Reidsville; her son, William C. “Corkey” Smith and wife, Wanda of Reidsville; her grandchildren, Suzanne Simpson, Bryan Smith and wife, Kelli, Amy DeLancey and husband, James, Corey Manley and Lisa Zimmerman; four great grandchildren; her sister, Dorothy Boaz of Reidsville and several nieces and nephews. The family would also like to acknowledge her longtime caregivers for their faithful and caring service, Marie Scales and Pam Millner. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday, February 27 at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.
