Herbert Matthew Smith

Herbert Matthew Smith “Matt”, 43, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2013. A Celebration of Life in his honor will be held at 11 am on Monday at Ruffin United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on Hwy. 700, Ruffin. Matt was born in Reidsville, April 14, 1969. He was educated in Rockingham and Caswell County Schools. He continued his education at Rockingham Community College, Western Carolina University, and Savannah College of Art and Design, where he received his Master’s Degree in Interior Design, and later served as an instructor in the Department of Design. He enjoyed residential and commercial design projects. He was employed as a Customer Service Representative at Levolor of Greensboro, and also worked for a period of time as a GED instructor for Rockingham Community College Continuing Education Department. He had a passion for the arts and performed in several musicals with the Rockingham County Theater Guild. As a gifted designer, Matt generously volunteered his services to the Danville Historical Society, as well as to family and friends. Matt is survived by his mother, Jenny Haskins Smith of Ruffin; father and stepmother, Marvin and Pat Smith of Claremont, NC; brother, Jason Smith and wife,Emily of Raleigh; special niece, Lilah Haskins Smith; grandmother, Kathleen M. Powell; uncle, Pete Haskins and wife, Lynn and their children Ben Haskins and Jessica Milligan; aunt, Lenora Metts and husband, Hampton; aunt, Margaret Smith McMann; special cousin, Jennings McMann and son, William; stepsiblings, David Setzer and wife, Gina, Kelly Setzer and friend Tamara Lail, and Beth Sims and husband, Jody; as well as being blessed with numerous close friends. The family will receive friends at Wilkerson’s Funeral Home, from 6pm to 8pm on Sunday, March 10th, and at other times at the home of his Mother and Grandmother, 9344 NC 700 Ruffin, NC. In Lieu of Flowers, memorials may be made to the Lilah Haskins Smith Scholarship Fund at NC State Employees Credit Union, 1601 Freeway Drive, Reidsville, NC 27320.
