Herbert Polo Summers

Reidsville – Herbert “Polo” Somers, 91, of 410 Brooks Road, died on Sunday, May 9, 2010, at his residence.Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at 3:00 P.M. at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with, Elder Troy Simpson, Elder Melvin Shelton and Elder Harry Stanley, officiating.Pallbearers will be Tony Doss, Bert Sellers, Wayne Somers, Charles Dowdy, Steve Osborne and Jerry Somers. Burial will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery.Polo was born on January 18, 1919 in Rockingham County to the late Luther and Sally Gill Somers. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Herbert L. Somers, brothers and sister. Polo was employed at the American Tobacco Company for many years and served as the elder of Wolf Island Primitive Baptist Church for over 40 years. He also was an avid hunter and loved horse back riding.Polo is survived by his wife of over 70 years, Louise Gooch Somers, of the residence; grandchildren, Michael Lee Somers of Reidsville and Missy Somers of Stoneville; 5 great grandchildren , one great great grandchild; brother, Aubrey Somers and wife, Marilyn of Reidsville and sister, Jane Gooch of Reidsville.The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home of Tuesday, May 11, 2010, from 6 to 8:30P.M. and other times at the residence.
