Herman Stewart Cummings, 83, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 23, 2018, at Rockingham County Hospice Home.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Howard Owens officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family will see friends on Tuesday evening from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at the funeral home, and other times at the home.
Herman was born in Rockingham County to the late George Bartlett and Mary Jane Jarrett Cummings. He was a retiree of The American Tobacco Company with 37 years of service and a faithful attendee of Amazing Grace Baptist Church. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Pattie Mae Cummings Holland, Corene Cummings Fulp and Betty Sue Cummings Roark and brother, David Jarrett Cummings.
Through the years he enjoyed gardening, traveling, riding on country roads and spending time with his family. “Papa” especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandson.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bessie Orrell Cummings; daughters, Janet Cummings Somers and husband, Mike and Sheila Cummings Bullock and husband, Bryan; grandchildren, Heather Somers Kelley and husband, Kenny, Amy Somers, Carly and Ben Bullock; great grandson, Braxton Somers; sister, Rhoda Cummings Shelton; sisters-in-law, Ruth Johnston Cummings, Sue Orrell Lovings and husband, James and Judy Orrell Lawson and numerous nieces and nephews.
