Ruffin: Hunter Eldridge Alverson, 81, of 2781 Worsham Mill Road, died on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Thursday, March 26,2009 at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with Rev. Arthur Holland and Rev. Gene Davis officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be James Isley, Seth Alverson, Mackenzie and Justin Gibbs, Wayne Woods and Greg Smothers.
Mr. Alverson was born in Rockingham County to the late Uel Henry Alverson and Dora London Alverson. He was one of the first graduates from Rockingham Community College and was an avid fisherman and musician and played at the Carolina House on Tuesday evenings with the Covington Church group. Hunter worked at American Tobacco Company for 23 years and also worked for GTE. He was a veteran of the US Army and a member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Smothers Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Handy Alverson of the home; son, Sammy Alverson and Daphne of Ruffin; daughters, Marilyn Harrelson and husband, Lanny of Reidsville; Jayne Gibbs of Ruffin; grandchildren, Missy Harrelson, Samantha and Seth Alverson, Mackenzie and Justin Gibbs, James, Blake, and Stephanie; sisters, Nettie Woods of Reidsville, Barbara Harrell of Raleigh, and Jean Nelson of Madison; special friend, Ed Daniels; and faithful canine companion, Skitter.
The family will receive friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 25th from 7:00- 9:00 PM. Other times the family will be at the home of Jayne Gibbs, 1402 Perkinson Road, Ruffin.
