Huston Reede Powell

Ruffin – Huston Reede Powell, 88, of 9344 NC 700, Ruffin, NC, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at his residence after being in declining health for the last ten months. A Funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, 9983 NC 700, Pelham, NC. Interment will follow in Dan River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Military honors from the Rockingham County Honor Guard. He was born May 10, 1920, in Ralph, Pennsylvania, to the late Duke Herbert and Dorothy Mae Paugh Powell. He moved to Morgantown, West Virginia at the age of ten. He graduated from Morgantown High School and attended West Virginia University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII having served in Italy. After military service, he worked in the automobile business; a dealership in Norfolk, VA; later as district service manager for Toyota. He retired in 1987 as regional parts and service manager for American Isuzu Motors in Atlanta, GA In retirement years, he enjoyed traveling, serving on the Council on Aging Board in Danville, VA, dancing at the Senior Citizens Center and spending time with family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pershing Truban Powell; two sisters, Gloria Yona Bramham and Constance Jane Powell and a brother, Reginald Denny Powell. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen McKinney Powell; daughter, Lenora Powell Metts and husband, Hampton of Richmond, VA; step-daughter, Virginia (Jenny) Haskins Smith of Ruffin, NC; step-son, Carroll Dennis (Pete) Haskins and wife, Lynn of Reidsville, NC; step-grandchildren, Matthew and Jason Smith, Ben Haskins and Jessica Milligan; several nieces and nephews. The family will see friends at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Friday, October 3, from 7:00 –9:00 PM and other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215 or to Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, Parsonage Fund, C/O Katie Cox, 344 Goose Pond Road, Ruffin, NC 27326.
