Janis Medlin Snow

Reidsville, NC: Janis Medlin Snow, 91, of Reidsville, NC, joined the Lord in Heaven on Wednesday afternoon, October 5, 2016 at The Lodge at Natchez Trace, Nashville, TN. Celebration of Life and funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 4, 2016 at Woodmont United Methodist Church, Reidsville, NC. Visitation will follow the church services at Woodmont UMC. Her ashes will be placed in the Woodmont UMC columbarium during a private family service. She was a native of Marshville, NC in Union County and was the daughter of the late George Medlin and the late Caroline Estelle Floyd Medlin. She had lived in Reidsville, NC since 1951 after marrying the late James Paul Snow of Reidsville, NC. After graduating from Marshville High School in 1943, she worked in the Pentagon for the Department of Defense coding and decoding military messages. After WWII ended in 1945, she attended Women’s College of the University of NC (now UNC-G) in Greensboro, NC where she earned her bachelors’ degree, graduate degree, and almost finished her EDD. After graduating from Women’s College, she worked for the NC Cooperative Extension Service for two years. She then taught 5th grade at Wentworth Elementary School and later 6th & 7th grade gifted-talented math and science at Reidsville Middle School, retiring from teaching after 33 years in 1984. She was a charter member of Woodmont UMC. She was the initial Director of the Rockingham County Headstart Program. She was passionate about teaching and taught GED and Adult Literacy classes for many years after retiring. She loved ballroom dancing and won many dancing awards with her partner of many years, the late Jean Grenade. In later years after dancing became more difficult, she and Jean played bridge competitively for years, Janis as a Silver Life Master. Janis was passionate about everything in her life, whether it was her children, grandchildren, students, friends, Bible study, ballroom dancing, bridge, volunteering, or just helping others in so many ways. She always loved a challenge, even learning to ride an ATV at age 88. She loved to ride around the White Arrow Farm in Kujo 4x4 (with son John) and cruising around Center Hill Lake (with Bobbie, Mark, and Caroline)! She will be greatly missed by family and friends alike but she is surely now busy teaching in Heaven! Janis was preceded in death by her husband James Paul Snow and two brothers, George Medlin Jr. of Littleton, NC and Floyd Pittman Medlin of Charlotte, NC.
