Reidsville – Jeanne Throckmorton Stanley, 87, of 705 Parkway Boulevard, died Sunday, October 21, a Moses Cone Hospital. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of First Baptist church, where she was an active member, with Dr. Bill Duke officiating. There will be a reception following the service, in the church Fellowship Hall. A native of Reidsville, she was a daughter of the late Beckham and Lillie Throckmorton. Jeanne graduated from Reidsville High School and attended Queens College in Charlotte, NC where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She worked as secretary for the Dean of Admissions at UNC-CH, while her husband Lee was a student, and also worked at Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC. Jeanne and Lee returned to Reidsville in 1955. Jeanne loved Reidsville and was active in her church and the community. She taught Kindergarten at First Methodist Church. She was a past president of the Junior Service League and served on the Board of Directors of the Crippled Children’s Clinic, United Way and Friends of the Reidsville Library. She was a member of the Downtown Promotional Committee. She was a Director Emeritus of First National Bank and was past president of the Annie Penn Memorial Hospital Trustees and first president of the Annie Penn Hospital Foundation. She was an active supporter of Rockingham Community College and was a Director Emeritus and honored as a Friend of the College. She was a volunteer at the Reidsville Soup Kitchen, Meals on Wheels, and Road to Recovery. Jeanne was a member of the 20th Century Study Club. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, and became a great grandmother on October 13th. She loved people and people loved her. Preceding her in death were her parents, sister, Betty T. Martin and husband, Bill, brother, BB Throckmorton, brother-in-law, Jess Johnson, and nephew, Jay Johnson. She was also predeceased by her mother-in-law, Grave G. Currie and a special aunt, Blanche T. Griffin. Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Lee R. Stanley; daughter, Meredith S. Smothers and husband, John of Greensboro; son, Larry Stanley and wife, Michelle Goyeau of Asheville; her granddaughters, Meg S. Robinson and husband, Jonathan of Decatur, GA; Jane S. Ferguson and husband, Drew of Raleigh; and grandson, Zachary Goyeau Stanley of Asheville; a great granddaughter, Helen Stewart Robinson; sister, Mary T. (Mert) Johnson of Greensboro; and nephew, Tom Martin and wife, Kay of Kansas City. Jeanne leaves behind many friends of all ages and a special friend, Loretta Graves. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Reidsville, NC, the Annie Penn Hospital Foundation, or the Rockingham Community College Foundation.
