John S Collie Jr., 79, of 1620 Hampton Road, Reidsville, NC 27320 passed away Thursday evening around 6:30 at his home.Funeral services for him will be on Sunday , Aug 26, 2012 at 3 PM at the DAN RIVER PRIMITIVE BAPTIST CHURCH - 8684 NC Highway 700 - Ruffin, NC 27326 with Elder Thomas Solomon officiating. The burial will be at the Mt Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 361 Mt Carmel Church Road, Reidsville, NC 27320.Mr. Collie was born on December 5, 1932 to the late John S. Collie, Sr. and Nellie Dix Collie and had lived in Rockingham County his entire life. He was also predeceased by a sister, Peggy Owens West.John graduated from Ruffin High School in 1951. He was valedictorian of his senior class. He attended Appalachian State University and graduated in 1955 from Elon University with an AB degree in Business Administration. He also completed one year at University of Tennessee School of Social Work. John was a Social Work Consultant with the NC Department of Human Resources/Division of Social Services for over thirty years, retiring in July 1991.John was a member of Dan River Primitive Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and Treasurer. He worked for several years with the Oregon Hill Voting Precinct. He was a state appointee to two terms on Social Services Board. John was a charter member of the Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire Department where he served as treasurer of the Fire District for seventeen years. Twice he was voted by the firemen as "Fireman of the Year". He served as Fire Commissioner and served on the Board of the Fire Department. John was in the US Navy for nineteen months. After Basic Training he served his time in Atlantic City, NJ.John is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, the former Nancy Ellington of the home. He is also survived by two sons, Steven Collie and wife Carmon of Tryon, NC, Brian Collie and wife Barbara of Pfafftown, NC and one daughter, Carol Collie Raiger and husband David of Kernersville, NC. There are six grandchildren, who survive, Shannon Collie of Charlotte, NC, Lauren Collie Birdno and husband Jared of Inman, SC, Tyler and Laura Collie of Pfafftown, NC and Taylor and Adam Raiger of Kernersville, NC; two brothers, David Collie and wife Janice of Blairsville GA and Bob R. Collie of Summerfield, NC. John's major interests over the years were Family and Church, Camping with Family, woodworking and crafts.Memorial contributions may be made to: Dan River PB Church Cemetery Fund, C/O Phyllis Stroud, 1732 Westover Drive, Danville, VA 24541or a charity of the donor's choice.The visitation will be held Saturday Aug 25, 2012 at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 6PM to 8 PM and other times at the residence.
