Reidsville: John “Robert” Carter, 79, went home to be with The Lord on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.
A funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M., Sunday, July 30, 2017, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Campbell, Rev. Charles Carter and Rev. Tommy Carter officiating. The interment will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Saturday, July 29, 2017 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
John was a native of Rockingham County and the son of the late Willis and Lucy Griffin Carter. He started working with his dad at a very young age and was the former owner and operator of J. Carter Grading. John was an accomplished grading operator and considered to be one of the very best of his trade. He was a committed man of faith and a loving husband and father; he especially adored his grandchildren. An avid sportsman, John enjoyed fishing, rabbit hunting and he especially loved coon hunting. He was very successful raising coon dogs winning numerous awards, including 2 Grand Knight Champions. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Donald and Jimmy Carter.
John is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bernice McCraw Carter of the home; children, Deborah Carter Tuttle and husband, Keith and Robert “Lee” Carter and wife, Tammy all of Reidsville; grandchildren, Jessica Carter, Christopher Carter and wife, Ashley, Amber Carter, Ryan Tuttle and Brittany Carter; great grandchildren, Bryson Hearn, Dawson Carter, Noah Carter, Mason Ponder, Dalton Carter, Bella Carter and Everleigh Ponder; brothers, Odell Carter and wife, Nancy of Greensboro, Tommy Carter and wife, Frances of Reidsville, Charles Carter and wife, Kathy of Reidsville, Steve Carter and wife, Donna of Brown Summit and Mike Carter and wife, Maryanne of Hickory; sister, Jane Watkins and husband, Ronnie of Reidsville; a large extended family and his special K-9 friend, Moe.
