Josephine W. Broadnax

Josephine Ward Broadnax, (JoJo) was born March 2, 1927, to Howard and Coulinertt Ward in Gaston County. As a young adult she was sent to New York City to attend to her ailing sister and later worked at Lanes and Wertheimer Department Store in NY. Along the way she met and married Theodore “Teddy” Broadnax.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and seven siblings: Sam Ward, Harry Ward, Ben Ward, Robert Ward, Mary Ella Smarr, Gracie Ward, and Mamie Sadler. She attended the Church of Christ and loved Rev. Ike who was often rumored to give out “special numbers”, her favorite quote “God is Good”.

She went to Bronx Center Rehabilitation Center in Bronx NY in 2017 due to a short illness and remained there until mid-July coming to NC where she was loved and cared for until her passing.

Josie loved her family, being a wife, mother, grandmother and never met a stranger. She enjoyed making others happy, gave gifts for no special reason, music got her moving and everybody knew she loved Bingo and always wearing her “bling” with her own special style.

Those left to cherish her memory is her daughter Alice L. Ward; two grandchildren, Antoinetta D. Fulton, Arianna D. Fulton (Mike); two great-grandchildren, Shannon Rowland (Lamont), Nah’Shon Farrar; two great-great-grandsons, Bryson and August Rowland; a host of nieces and nephews, friends at Bronx Center, NY; and special friends in Reidsville, Henry and Marsette Summers.

Special thanks to the FAM transportation of Reidsville, Annie Penn Hospital ER, and third floor nurses and doctors for their care and kindness and Wilkerson Funeral Home for their services.

A private family viewing was held, and a tree is planted in Mrs. Broadnax’s name.
