Reidsville – Julia Carter King, 90, of 1224 Fillman Drive passed from this life on January 29, 2011 at Hospice Home of Rockingham County. A graveside service will be held 10:30 AM, Monday, January 31, 2011 at Reidlawn Cemetery with Rev. Heath Lloyd officiating. Julia Carter King was born on August 22, 1920 to the late William Thomas and Annie Rodgers Carter. Julia worked at her first job for six years at J.C. Penny Company. She then went to work at American Tobacco Company, retiring after 38 years in the payroll department. During World War II, Julia did volunteer work at Annie Penn Hospital after becoming a certified Red Cross Nurse’s Aide. Later she did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society. She was active in the Cancer Support Group at First Baptist Church in Reidsville. Julia had cancer surgery in May of 1997. Mrs. King joined Fairview Baptist Church and was baptized on July 30, 1933. At the age of 14, Julia started working in Sunday School. She taught all age groups from small children to senior citizens. She served as church clerk for more than 25 years. Julia worked with W.M.U. at First Baptist Church in Reidsville from 1942 through 1966. In 1966 she began work in the W.M.U. program at Fairview Baptist Church. She spent three days in Richmond celebrating W.M.U.’s 100 years of service. She served as treasurer of Dan Valley W.M.U. council for a number of years. Julia has also served on the finance committee, nominating committee, church furnishing committee to furnish the new sanctuary, deacon selection committee and the pulpit committee. Among her other interests, she was a member of the Town and Country Garden Club and the Pilot Club. On December 24th 1939 Julia was married to Hassel Jett King He died on April 13, 1998. Along with her parents and her beloved husband, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Mrs. Helen Carter Murphy and Mrs. Frances Carter Coleman; brothers, Thomas E. Carter, J. William Carter and Robert W. Carter. Mrs. King is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Carter Fulton, formerly of Winston Salem now Winchester, Va.; sister-in-law, Mrs. Geneva Gibson Carter of Reidsville; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at Mrs. King’s home, 1224 Fillman Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. King’s honor to the Hospice Home of Rockingham County, P.O. Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
