Katherine Barker Howerton

Katherine Barker Howerton, age 74, unexpectedly left this world after a brief illness on Sunday, August 8th.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Fairview Baptist Church with Rev. Heath Lloyd and Pastor Steve Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 11th from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Katherine, also fondly known by her childhood nickname, “Tootie” will be missed by family and friends. Katherine was an extremely creative person. Early in life while her children were small she was a personal seamstress and after they were older she worked at Matkins Fabric Shop. Later, she was employed at The Hitching Post and came to love antique and vintage items. When this place closed she opened her own antique shop, Tootie’s Treasures, which she ran for several years. She loved hunting for treasures and unique finds at flea markets, yard sales and roadsides. She had a knack for repurposing others junk into beautiful things for the home. She continued to have a booth in a local consignment shop until her untimely departure from this world. Katherine was a spiffy dresser, mixing and matching clothing to make gorgeous outfits from head to toe. For several years she was a model for The Cat’s Meow clothing boutique. Katherine was a member of Fairview Baptist Church where she served on several committees. She loved to coordinate decorating for different events at the church. She was quick-witted, loved good jokes and one always knew where she stood on most any matter as she was quite straight-forward. She loved and never missed Ladies Night every Thursday with her special friends.

Katherine will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Willie Yancey and Novella Lilly Barker and her sister Nellie Stone.
Surviving is loving husband David Howerton, sons David Lee Howerton (Penny), Todd Howerton (Jennifer) and daughter, Michele Messanvi; grandchildren, Broc Howerton, Logan Howerton, Brandon Harris, Brianna and Matthew Townsend; great granddaughter, Atley Townsend; sister, Barbara Jones (Ronnie), Bill Barker and James Barker (Donna); as well as many special nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Mike Howerton.
