Ruffin: Kathleen McKinney Haskins Powell, 89, passed away Monday, June 9, 2014 at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden, NC.
A celebration of life will be held 2:00 PM, Thursday, June 12 at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Lee Eggers officiating. The burial will follow at Dan River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
Kathleen was born August 24, 1924 to the late Elder Sam and Lena McKinney. She was a graduate of Ruffin High School, Class of 1942. Upon graduating she began her working career with Export Tobacco Company. She later accepted the challenge of learning the General Motors bookkeeping System and worked as a bookkeeper / office manager for Wyatt/Tamson Chevrolet, Wrenn-Astin Chevrolet, Dewey Datsun and Mitchell Motors. She was a member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women and held various offices over the years. She was also an active member of the Happy Home Extension Homemakers. Retirement years were spent traveling, playing card games with family and friends, dancing at the senior citizen center, gathering with her high school reunion committee and most of all spending more time with her family.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, the father of her children, Pete Haskins, Sr.; her second husband, Huston Powell; grandson, Matthew Smith; sisters, Gracie Johnson, Muriel Strader, Mossie Walsh, Irene Setliff, Connie Page, Viola Hill; and brother, Grover McKinney.
She is survived by her daughters, Jenny Smith of the home, Lenora Metts and husband, Hampton of Richmond, VA; son, Pete Haskins and wife, Lynn of Reidsville; grandsons, Jason Smith and wife, Emily and Ben Haskins; granddaughter, Jessica Milligan; great granddaughter, Lilah Haskins Smith and grand dog, Charlie.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 11 from 6 – 8:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and all other times at 9344 Highway 700 in the Mayfield Community, Ruffin, NC.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the emergency department and intensive care unit of Morehead Hospital for their care, kindness and compassion to our mom. May God bless each and every one of you.
