Leroy Poindexter

Pelham, NC:       Leroy Poindexter, our beloved father, grandfather, brother and husband went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 11, 2008 at the age of 75.   He had been in declining health for months, and had been hospitalized for the past two months.   Born in Rockingham County, NC on January 28, 1932, he was the son of Roy F. and Nora Stanley Poindexter.   He lived all of his life in Rockingham and Caswell Counties.   He worked for Dan River Mills for over 30 years and retired from Burlington Industries after 12 years of service.   He was an active member of Lively Stones Baptist Church in Pelham where he served as usher and groundskeeper for many years.   The upkeep of the grounds of the church was his passion, and beside that of his children and grandchildren, it was his pride and joy.   He was an avid Washington Redskins, New York Yankees and Danville Braves fan, along with any other team that was on a winning streak. In 1952, he married Betty Louise Lee Poindexter, who survives.   In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Cheryl P. Brumfield and husband, Charles of Danville, VA, and Kim P. Julian and husband, Doug of Eden, NC.    The sunshine of his life were his three grandchildren, Matthew Tyler Brumfield, Kerri Elizabeth Brumfield and Ryan Adam Julian.   He is also survived by ten wonderful and loving siblings consisting of seven dear sisters, Adell Poindexter, Alleen P. Lee, Estelle P. Hamlett, Myrtle P. Bailey, and Delane P. Bailey all of Pelham, NC, Nora P. Alderson of Danville, VA and Clara P. Marshall of Providence, NC; three brothers, Tommie L. Poindexter of Eden, NC, John W. “Buck” Poindexter of Pelham, NC and Clyde D. Poindexter of Reidsville, NC; a very “special” friend and close brother-in-law, Andrew “Danny” Lee and his wife, Vickie; numerous nieces and nephews who were all dear to his heart and more cousins than this paper has room to print.   He also leaves many dear friends who were so important to his life from the Chandler Mill Road and Porter’s Store. A celebration of his life will be held on Monday, January 14, 2008 at Lively Stones Baptist Church in Pelham, NC at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Michael Kent, Reverend Mitch Cifers and Reverend Avery Marshall.   Interment will follow immediately after the service at the church’s cemetery.   The family will receive friends Sunday, January 13th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home, 1909 Richardson Drive, Reidsville, NC; and at other times at the home located at 2443 Chandler Mill Road, Pelham, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lively Stones Baptist Church, 2347 Chandler Mill Road, Pelham, NC 27311 in his memory for their “Honeybees” program. “Don’t cry because he is not longer with us, smile because you knew hime”.
