Reidsville – Marilyn Coleman Burton, 79, of 1110 Green Street, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held 3:30 PM Friday, October 22, 2010 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Duke, Rev. Dave Huggins, Stephanie Snyder and Miss Hope Fargis officiating. The burial will follow in Greenview Cemetery. Marilyn was born in Rockingham County, NC and was the daughter of the late William Luther and Mary Golden Coleman. After graduating from Reidsville High School in 1949, she later graduated from the Baptist School of Nursing. Marilyn was the first Nursing Director of the Rockingham County Health Department and retired with over 30 years of service. She was a former member of the Rockingham County Health Board and was the co-founder and health affiliate of the First Baptist Church Ladies Cancer Support Group. She was a longtime and faithful member of First Baptist Church. Marilyn was the ultimate caregiver always nurturing and supporting family, friends and neighbors. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved caring for, laughing and playing with her grandchildren, shopping, shoes, the beach and music. Along with her parents, Marilyn was also preceded in death by her husband, D.C. Burton, Jr. and her brother, William Elwood Coleman. Marilyn is survived by her daughters, Laura Susan Burton, and Lisa Burton-Bennett and husband, Craig; her grandchildren, Carson Leigh and Coleman Craig Bennett all of Reidsville; her sister-in-law, Millie Coleman of Clearwater, FL; her loving and special cousin, Louise Clifton; numerous nieces and nephews and her beloved dachshund, Millie. The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 6-8 pm. at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at Laura’s home (915 Oakcrest Drive). The family would like to express their appreciation for the wonderful care given to their mother by the Palliative Care nursing staff at Moses Cone and special thanks to Bayada Nurses, Heather Price and Mary Adams.
