Winston Salem: Martha Hardin Coleman, formerly of Reidsville passed away on Friday, December 4, 2015 at Brookridge Retirement Community.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Reidsville with Rev. Dave Huggins officiating. The family will see friends after the service at the church. The committal service will follow at 1:30 PM in the Clyde Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian.
Martha was the daughter of the late Walter Harrison Hardin and Byrd Cameron Hardin. After graduating from Liberty High School and Appalachian State Teachers College, Martha came to Reidsville to teach at the then new Monroeton School. Thus began a lifelong career in education, for which she had a great passion, with both the Rockingham County and Reidsville City School Systems. She also pursued graduate studies at UNC Greensboro. Martha moved to Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston Salem in 1992. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Reidsville, and in later years, First Baptist Church in Winston Salem. She was a member of the Federated Woman’s Club, Alpha Delta Kappa teachers’ sorority, and was founding members of the Monroeton Garden Club.
Survivors include her son, John Thomas Coleman of Richmond; sister-in-law, Chestina E. Coleman; niece, Beverly DeStefano of Wilmington, as well as a host of other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Coleman and a brother, John Ross Hardin.
