Mary Agnes Barnhill Hux 91, died August, 30 at her home. Mary was born August 21, 1925 to Kenneth Raymond Barnhill and Lelia Blanche Marks Barnhill in Prince George County, Virginia. Mary spent her childhood in Halifax County, North Carolina. At age 16 in 1942, she traveled to Wright-Patterson air force base in Dayton, Ohio to help with the war effort. Shortly after, she married Horace Jefferson Hux and they returned to North Carolina where Horace attended N.C. State. Horace and Mary moved to Rockingham County after his graduation and he became the Rockingham County Extension Chairman. Horace died in 1982. Mary served as a school librarian originally at Bethany high school, then as a teacher and librarian at Wentworth high school before becoming the first librarian at Rockingham County High School where she retired in 1990. Mary had many former students who loved her for her kind, generous and caring heart. Mary was a member of The First Baptist Church on Main Street in Reidsville where she served as a Deacon, a Sunday School teacher and Director of the WMU. Mary was also an active member of Delta Kappa Gama (DKG)and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was also an avid supporter/volunteer of the Reidsville Free Clinic and was on the Foundation Board of Rockingham Community College. Mary was a mentor and educator who earned her A.A. degree from Rockingham Community College as a member of its first graduating class. She earned her B.A. and M.A.’s degree from U.N.C.G. after raising 4 children. Mary is survived by her children, Douglas Raymond Hux, Deborah Leigh Hux Mabe, Dr. Stephen Marshall Hux and wife Lyn and Kenneth Jefferson Hux and wife Beth. She is also survived by a sister, Francis B. Godwin and a brother Wilfred A. Barnhill, several grandchildren and one great grandchild. In addition to being preceded in death by her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Vivian B. Godwin and brothers, Burt H. Barnhill and Kenneth R. Barnhill. Visitation will be at the First Baptist Church at 10:00 am Friday, September 2 and the funeral with proceed immediately after at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
