Melba Shumate Hammett

Reidsville – Melba Hammett, 73, of 2460 NC 87, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014, at Moses Cone Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, June 9, 2014, at Thompsonville Baptist Church in Reidsville with Rev. Mike Campbell officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00-12:00 on Monday at the church. Interment will follow in Reidlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family at the home, 2460 NC 87 in Reidsville. Melba was born on August 4, 1940, in Rockingham County to the late Earnest and Ruth Glydes Shumate. She worked for Lorillard Tobacco Company for 42 years. She was a member at Florida Street Baptist Church and Sedgefield Baptist Church and currently a member at Thompsonville Baptist Church. She was very devoted to her family, her friends and her church family. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Jackson Hammett, brothers, Haywood, Melvin, Elmo and Bobby Shumate and sisters, Patricia and Ruth Shumate. Survivors include her children, Jerry Allen and wife Lori, Glynis Thomas and husband Paul, Jerrold Hammett and Jeffrey Hammett and wife Melissa; special daughter-in-law, Cynthia Fryar; grandchildren, Blake Hammett, Bryson Thomas, Jacelyn Thomas, Matthew Allen, Stephanie Jones and husband, Colby and Michelle Way and husband, Jamie; great grandchildren, Megan Way, McKenzie Way, Drake Way and by special gift through marriage, Kayla Jones and brothers, Garland and Kenneth Shumate. The surviving children would like to give special thanks to Melba’s brother, Kenneth Shumate for his love, dedication and care for their mother. The children have been blessed by his love, dedication and care over the years. Memorial contributions may be made to Thompsonville Baptist Church, 2033 NC 87, Reidsville, NC 27320.
