Michael Burns

Reidsville – Michael Burns, 59, of 408 Whip-O-Will Way, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at his residence. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 1, 2014, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dwayne Anders officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Burns was born on October 16, 1954, in Utica, NY, to the late Robert Thomas and Virginia Marie Slaney Burns. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joanne Burns Poelker. Michael grew up in Arkport, NY. He served as a Sergeant in the US Air Force from 1973-76. He worked for the Reidsville Police Dept. from 1978-79. He served the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Dept. from 1979-2006, when he retired as Captain. He also retired from the Wentworth Volunteer Fire Dept. after 20 years. After retirement, he worked part-time for TAMCO. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and kayaking on the river. Survivors include his wife, Susan Burns; his sons, Chad Burns and wife Amanda and Ryan Burns; his step-son, Matthew Edwards; his grandchildren, Shawn, Jordyn and Jakob; his sisters, Terri Cornelius and husband David and Pat Koontz and husband Chris; several nephews and his special companions, Rusty and Foofoo. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 31, 2014, from 6-8 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
