Well known for his beautiful tenor voice, he is now singing praises to the Lord with the heavenly choir, singing the song the angels cannot sing. Clay was the last of his 10 siblings to join his parents at the foot of Jesus.  He was preceded in death by his parents Nathaniel Pettis and Rosa Toler Stone; his siblings David Toler Stone, Jerry Dell Stone, Herman Stone; Juanita Stanley, Inez Warf, Irene Griffin, Mozelle Loftis, Marie Stanley, and Marion Ridgeway. He is survived by his wife Donna Stone. Left to carry on the legacy and lessons he taught them are his children -  son Nathan Carl Stone and wife Faye, daughter Linda Somers and husband Craig; grandchildren Shannon Hazelwood and husband Allen, Ashley Carter and husband Chris, Ellenjane Somers and boyfriend Adam, Alexis Kirkman and husband Brian; great-grandchildren Luke, Drew and Kate Hazelwood,  Noah and Bella Carter, Nicholas Huffman, Emma Jane Saul, Christian and Carter Kirkman; daughter Eleanor James and husband Wayne, Randall Glass and girlfriend Leshia, granddaughter Tanya McKinney and husband Billy, great-grandchildren Terra and Freja McKinney.  Papa loved his grands and greats and will be missed by them greatly. Uncle Clay also leaves behind many nieces and nephews that loved and respected him, more than he probably knew.

Clay was known for his ability to fix any type of appliance and his years spent with T.V. and Radio Clinic brought him into many lives as the 'Maytag Man'. He was employed and retired from the former P. Lorillard Tobacco Company and trained many people to work there. It has been said he could make the worst of machines run smoothly. Later, he took a job with Auto Auction Sales in Greensboro. But most of all he was known for his dedication to the Lord. He served several Churches in the area as a Choir Director and Music Leader and was an anointed Deacon. If you knew Clay, you also know that he spoke his mind and the truth. He was known for his straightforward talk but also for his sense of humor. He was a caring person, had a passion for God’s word and provided the utmost encouragement for everyone.

We will all miss him for many reasons but we rejoice knowing that he is now at peace and his many battles with cancer are over.  We rest assured he was welcomed to that Pearly White City and heard, ''Welcome home thy good and faithful servant''.
