Jeff was born July 10, 1945, in Sarasota, Florida to Paul and Mickey Jones. The Jones Family moved to Greensboro where Jeff grew up. The family business, Jones Brothers’ Bakery, bakers of Holsum Bread, established in the early 1900’s, was located at 104 East Lee Street in Greensboro. The entire Jones Family worked in the business and Jeff went on in the business to become the General Manager as he worked as the head of sales, chief baker and in the finance office until the bakery was sold in the 1980’s. Jeff attended and graduated from Page High School and attended NC State University and Guilford College.
In Jeff’s young years he raced Go Carts, went Big Game Fishing and Hunting with his brothers and dad, and raced Hydroplanes. Jeff started flying planes at the age of 13 with the Civil Air Patrol on Air Harbor Rd in Greensboro. Also during this stage in Jeff’s life, the entire extended Jones Family showed harness and Hackney ponies throughout the United States with a lot of success.
Jeff was the youngest Factory Sponsored winning rider at age 16 to professionally race Yamaha Motorcycles at Daytona International Speedway, wearing white leather when all other riders wore black.
In Jeff’s twenties, in California, he won the Motorcross championship riding professionally for Husqvarna. By this time, the Jones Family started breeding, raising, and showing Quarter Horses. On September 5, 1974, Jeff’s son, Paul Jeffrey Jones, II was born in Greensboro, NC. Jeff was so very happy that Jeffrey was born and celebrated all over Greensboro. “JEFF SAID” the day Jeffery was born was the best day of his life. After Jeffery’s birth, Father and son formed a very special bond and traveled all over the United States to find the best roping schools and horses for Jeffery. This was the beginning of Jeff and Jeffery’s life adventure of horse showing, leading to Jeffrey’s acceptance to college at Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Oklahoma, where he received a college scholarship for him and his 2 horses.
Jeff’s other interests were in Cutting Horses and Calf Roping. He pursued these interests with the family for many years, winning the National Cutting Horse Championship in Jackson, Mississippi.
When Jeff was in his late 40’s and early 50’s, he raised and showed Llamas professionally. He won the National Llama Championship in New Mexico with his prized sire, “Piano Man.” Also Jeff was racing Cart Cars, which are one step under the Indy Cars during this time, which was another interest.
Jeff met the love of his life, Donna Jones Jones (that is really her name), through mutual friends in January 2012. In June, 2012, they married at Greensboro National in Summerfield, NC, which was originally the Jones Family Farm prior to it becoming a Golf Course.
Jeff and Donna purchased their 35 foot Viking Sports Fisherman in 2014, which is currently docked at Federal Pointe Yacht Club in Carolina Beach, NC. Carolina Beach was Jeff and Donna’s getaway and he often referred to it as “the best kept secret in North Carolina.” Carolina Beach has been their home away from home and where they have many, many friends.
Of all the stories Jeff told, his mama said they were all true….
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Jones.
Survivors include his wife, Donna Jones; his son, Paul Jeffrey Jones, II and wife Dana; his granddaughter, Jayna Jones; his sister, Sherri Pridgen; his nephew, Paul Pridgen and wife Emilie; his great nephew, Paul Thomas Pridgen, and stepson, William Martin and wife Megan.
