Raymond Leon Styer, 85, of 240 Styer Dairy Road, went home to be with The Lord Sunday afternoon, November 11, 2018 at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County surrounded by his loving family.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Friday, November 16, at Wilkerson Funeral Home with Pastor Ronald Fink and Rev. Allen Myers officiating. The burial will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens with Military Honors. The family will receive friends, Thursday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Ray was born in Royersford, PA to the late George Nelson and Viola Buckwalter Styer. He was a graduate of Royersford High School and served two years in the US Army. During this time he met the love of his life, Sara Wright a year before his discharge from the Army and they were married one year later on September 22, 1957. They just celebrated 61 years together.
Ray was a lifelong farmer who respected the land and wildlife that has been evident by his commitment to “no-till” farming and soil conservation. He has been recognized and honored over the years with numerous awards from the US Department of Agriculture. He was a pioneer in Rockingham County in “no-till” farming. He has served as vice president of the NC Farm Bureau Board for over 20 years and was a longtime member of the Rockingham County Cattlemen’s Association. He was also a longtime firefighter and first responder for the Monroeton Volunteer Fire Department. In his later years, he enjoyed serving the community while working at Wilkerson Funeral Home. He was a faithful member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church having served on many various committees and the church council. Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas Ray Styer; his sisters, Geraldine Miller and Marilyn James; and his son-in-law, Raymond Perry.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Wright Styer of the home; his children, John Styer (Melissia), Denise Perry, Corrine Ore (Sammy) and Mark Styer (Shannon); his grandchildren, Dale Perry (Rebekah), Sara Perry, Kayla Ore, Callie Perry, Bree Ore, Alis Styer, Donna Styer, Bryce Ore, Alec Styer, Madison Styer and Aden Styer; his great grandchildren, Lincoln Horsley and Ava Perry; a large extended family and his special K-9 friend, Mopsy.
