Shirley Cox Dunlap Rickman, 83, of 160 Pennington Road, went home to be with The Lord Saturday, August 7, 2021, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, August 9, 2021, at Covington Wesleyan Church with Pastor Ralph Clayton officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at the home.
Shirley was born in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Janie and Lonnie Cox. She graduated from Wentworth High School. While working at Burlington Industries where she retired with over 40 years of service, Shirley also served as church secretary for over 25 years at Covington Wesleyan. She was a lifelong and faithful member of the church. She was an avid sports fan, lover of bowling, horseshoes, Duke basketball, and the Atlanta Braves. Shirley kept her bag packed and loved traveling with her sisters and friends. She danced with the Carolina girls in many Christmas parades over the years. She was also the recipient of many medals in the Senior games in Raleigh including basketball, bowling, horseshoes, shot put, shuffleboard, softball throw and track. She lived life to the fullest. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her late husband, Charles Gurney Dunlap; sister Louise Williams; and brothers Preston and Wallace Cox.
She is survived by her husband Dewey Rickman; two children, Charles Steven Dunlap and Cheryl Dunlap Bunton (Stephen); stepson Jason Rickman; three grandchildren Ashley Carter, Morgan Dunlap (Francis), and Olivia Dunlap. She has three step grandchildren, Nicole Reid (Keith), Angela Whitesell (Chad) and Laurin Landwehrmann (Johnathon); special great grandson Carson Jones; seven step grandchildren; sisters Doris Myrick (Leon) and Joanne Sutton; brother Buddy Cox (Betty); sister-in-law Mary Ann Cox; special sister and friend Joyce “Casey” Case, and a large extended family.
