Summerfield - Mr. Thomas Douglas "Doug" King, 77, a resident of Summerfield (Bethany), died Thursday, August 16, 2012. Mr. King was born August 8, 1935, in Ash, NC, the son of Altie Nevada Smith and Tom King.A graveside service will be held for family and friends on Monday, August 20, 2012 at 1:00 PM at the family cemetery. At other times friends are welcome to stop by the home.Doug spent the first years of his life living on the coast of North Carolina on the farm raising tobacco. After a brief time in the Navy, he decided to travel for a short time, before returning to North Carolina, where he met the girl of his dreams, Mildred Ann Gammon. Doug married his beloved wife on October 9, 1960. First they settled in Greensboro, they moved to Summerfield (Bethany). Together they started and developed a successful carpentry/ contractors business and had a son, Terry Douglas King.Through their success they were able to purchase a second home on the North Carolina coast of Doug's youth, where they spent many years in the company of friends and family.Doug retired from his business in 2007, and settled in to enjoy his golden years with his beloved wife in their Summerfield (Bethany) home. His presence was a treasured part of many lives and he will be missed.Doug was predeceased by both of his parents, his, brother Fred Allen King and his nephew Samuel Gammon.He survived by his wife, Ann, his son, Terry, his daughter-in-law Wendy Ann King, sisters, Peggy Pelasara, Mary Katherine "Tootsie" Grissett and husband David, Janet McCoy and husband, Colin, brothers Rabon King, Phillip King and wife, Cynthia, Jerry King and wife, Lamar, a very special niece, Pam Riggsbee, and numerous other nieces and nephews.The family request that instead of flowers, donations be made to the Rockingham County Humane Society, 205 Boone Road, Eden, North Carolina 27288.
