Troy Lucas O'Brien, 44, of Burlington, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2025. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Wilkerson Funeral Home, officiated by Troy's uncle, Pastor Eddie O’Brien. Burial at Salisbury National Cemetery will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and at other times at the home.
Troy was born in Wayne County to Richard Wallace O'Brien, Jr., and Lori Morgan Gauldin. He graduated from Southern Guilford High School in 1998 and began his career at Morgan Mechanical Contractors, Inc., where he worked until March 2006. Seeking new challenges, he joined the U.S. Navy on April 12, 2006, serving honorably for six years. His journey began with basic training at Great Lakes Recruit Training Base in Illinois, followed by specialty training in Aviation Maintenance Administration at Naval Air Station Meridian in Mississippi.
Troy was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, for three years and completed a six-month tour in Iraq before concluding his service at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida.
In October 2017, he married Jay Armstead and became a father to her daughter, Aubrey. Though they later divorced in December 2023, he never stopped loving them, and they continued to have an amicable relationship. Never one to stop learning, Troy earned an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Information Technology – Web Development from GTCC in 2021. He was employed as an IT specialist at Bullhorn, Inc. until his passing. Troy enjoyed playing guitar and listening to music. He loved college and professional sports and was known for his vast knowledge of sports statistics. Despite facing health challenges over the past decade, Troy touched the lives of those around him and will be remembered with love.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Bobbie O’Brien; his maternal grandfather, Jack Morgan; his maternal grandmother, Jessie Morgan; and his father, Richard O’Brien, Jr. He is survived by his loving mother, Lori Gauldin, and her husband, Zane, along with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins whom he truly loved.
