Reidsville: Vernell McCollum Jones, 88, of 130 New Lebanon Church Rd., passed away at Moses Cone Hospital on Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, July 18, 2014, at New Lebanon Christian Church with Dr. Mark Harris officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will follow the service in the fellowship hall and other times at the home, 130 New Lebanon Church Rd. Mrs. Jones was born on September 26, 1925, in Rockingham County to the late William Bryan and Fannie Mae Adkins McCollum. Vernell married Grady Jones on January 1, 1946, and celebrated their 68th anniversary this year. She was a lifelong member of New Lebanon Christian Church, a member of the Ann Green Sunday School Class and an Awana Leader for 10 years. She was a member of the James Hunter Chapter of the DAR in Madison and a Charter Member of the Wentworth Ruritan Club. She retired from P. Lorillard Tobacco Co. after 30 ½ years. Vernell loved God, her church and her family. She enjoyed the outdoors and working with her flowers. She was an avid reader, an excellent seamstress and awesome cook. She enjoyed travelling and bird watching, especially bluebirds. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, William Phillip McCollum and Holton Worth McCollum, Sr. She is survived by her husband, Grady B. Jones; her children, Kenny and (Joyce) Jones of Reidsville, Monette and (Nathan) Rich of Reidsville, Sherrill and (Phillip) Hilton of Summerfield and Bryan and (Cherie) Jones of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Seth and (Tracy) Jones, Brandy and (Ken) Curtis, Alex Springs, Suzanne Springs, Vallere and (P.G.) Shelton, Suzanne and (Dave) Lang, Kenzie Hanks and boyfriend William Etheridge, Zach Hilton, Rebecca and (James) Blankenship, Bryanne Jones and Brooklyn Jones; great grandchildren, Tony Farmer, Zane Prusia, Ethan Jones, David Springs, Autumn Springs, Ian Shelton, Zollie Shelton, Ceirdwyn Shelton, Eowyn Shelton, and two great grandchildren on the way. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ruth McCollum, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Lebanon Christian Church Awana Fund, 521 Huffines Mill Rd, Reidsville, NC 27320 or to Hospice of Rockingham County, PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
