Reidsville- Walter Daniel “W. D.” Rakestraw, 83, of 712 South Main Street, died on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Annie Penn Hospital.Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ralph Clayton and Rev. David Surrett officiating. Pallbearers will be Ronald Rakestraw, Tim Puckett, Bill Rakestraw, Harry Rakestraw, Ray Dove and Steve Dove. Burial will follow in Smyrna Presbyterian Church Cemetery. He was born in Rockingham County to the late Walter Jeremiah and Elsie Ellington Rakestraw. In addition to his parents, he preceded in death by his son, W. D. “Dan” Rakestraw, Jr. and brother, David M. Rakestraw.He was a member of Smyrna Presbyterian Church, Dan River Masonic Lodge of Madison, and Elks Lodge of Reidsville. He was retired from the I. R. S. with over 15 years of service. After retirement, he was the owner of R and R Realty , Golden Tan, Silver Shears and Golden Comb. He also served in the United States Army as a military police. W. D. was an avid cribbage and chess player. He was loved and respected by all who worked for him.He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Dove Rakestraw, of the home, daughter-in-law, Lisa Webb Rakestraw, of Greensboro, uncle, J. D. Ellington, of High Point and numerous nieces and nephews.The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence.
