WENTWORTH—Walter Allen Gunn, Sr., 94, of 440 Spring Road, Wentworth, passed away on Monday, February 22nd, 2010, at Hospice of Rockingham County, surrounded by his family.The funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 25th at Wilkerson Funeral Home, 1909 Richardson Drive in Reidsville, with Rev. Fred Moretz, Rev. Larry Durham, and Rev. John Burton officiating. Burial will follow at Reidlawn Cemetery on Barnes Street in Reidsville. The pallbearers will be Keith Gunn, Derek Gunn, Roman Gunn, Matthew Gunn, Greg Strader, Brad Gunn, Lance Gunn, Mark Reeves, Bobby Sands and Nathan Rich.Mr. Gunn was born in Reidsville, NC on August 23, 1915, to the late Alvin E. Gunn and Nell Burton Gunn. He was a farmer and served on the ASCS Community Committee for many years, and as a judge for the Rockingham County Board of Elections. He was a life-long member of Wentworth United Methodist Church, where he served as a Trustee. Mr. Gunn was preceded in death by his wife, Mittie Barrett Gunn; youngest son, Walter A. Gunn, Jr. and grandson, John Curtis Gunn, Jr.; sister, Edwina Gunn; brother, Ralph Gunn; and special friend, Pauline Sands.Surviving are sons, John Curtis Gunn, Sr. (Alieta) of Claremore Oklahoma, Donald Ray Gunn (Sonja) of Madison, Nelson Allen Gunn (Mona) of Burlington; daughters, Brenda Strader Ward (Bill) of Wentworth, and Jewell Dull (Larry) of Greensboro; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Jean Gunn of Wentworth; brother, Lawrence Gunn (Julia) of Wentworth, and sister, Nelvin Reeves of Parkersburg NC. Mr. Gunn is also survived by nine grand-children, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 24th, at Wilkerson Funeral Home, and at other times will be at the home of Bill and Brenda Ward, 498 Spring Road in Wentworth.Memorial contributions may be made to Wentworth UMC, P.O. Box 133, Wentworth NC 27375 and to Hospice of Rockingham County, P. O. Box 281, Wentworth NC 27375.
