Walter Herman Hilton, 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 21, 2024. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at Glencoe United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Matthew Johnson officiating.
Walter was born in Guilford County to the late E.M. Hilton and Lessie Morgan Hilton, the second youngest of 7 boys. He was raised on a farm in Rockingham county. He joined the army and was stationed in Okinawa during the Korean Conflict. He was responsible for sewing and repairing tents and canvases for the war effort. When he returned home he got a job at a furniture factory before finding employment with AT&T, at that time known as Western Electric. He retired at 55 from AT&T, but would continue to work a number of part time jobs that he very much enjoyed. He drove a shuttle van for the Greensboro Parade of Homes. He was a battery tester at the Greensboro Auto Auction where he continued to work until he quit to take care of his wife Christine at their home during her later years. He loved to share a story, a smile, a joke and a meal with anyone. He loved reading about, looking at, watching and driving automobiles. But what he loved the most was his wife Christine Moore Hilton, their 56 years of marriage and the life that they built together. Walter was a loving husband, a dedicated father, a beloved grandfather, and a proud great grandfather. He was a man that traveled the world, but was never more content than at home in his recliner surrounded by the loved ones that he cared so deeply for. He was known to family and friends by many names:Walter, Herman, Herm, Pepaw and Poopah. So many names for a man that garnered so much love from so many.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Christine Moore Hilton; 6 brothers, Coy (Jaquelene), Lester (Ruth), Grady (Nancy), Vance (Mabel), Roy ( Viola) and Jack (Hariet) Hilton.
Walter is survived by his son, Phillip Hilton (Sherrrill); grandchildren, Zachary Hilton and Rebecca H. Blankenship (James); great grandchildren, Sadie Mae and Jackson Blankenship.
In lieu flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Ancora Compassionate Care at PO Box 281, Wentworth, NC 27375.
