Brown Summit – Wilma Alexander Powell, 91, of 5809 Turner-Smith Road., died on Monday, March 3, 2008 at her home.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Apple’s Chapel Christian Church cemetery with Rev. Allen Myers officiating.
Mrs. Powell was born in Washington County on November 27, 1916 to the late James and Mary Madline Tarkenton Alexander. Wilma was a homemaker and raised five children on her own. She was a loving caregiver for several people in the community and was also an unofficial neighborhood concierge, providing transportation and running errands of which she did with a glad heart. When Wilma was no longer able to drive, she still reached out by sending many cards of encouragement and cheer to friends and family. Mrs. Powell was a faithful and long-life member of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Julian Powell; brothers, Raymond, Sam, Leon, and Bill Alexander; sisters, Aliene Pritchett and Gertrude Civils.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her sons, Jim Powell and wife Peggy of Brown Summit and Jerry Wayne Powell and wife, Katrina of Brown Summit; daughters, Janice Nicholson, and husband Jerry of Greensboro and Joy Green and husband Ernest of Brown Summit; grandchildren, Traci Powell, Morgan and Mason Nicholson, Melissa MacKinnon, Joshua and Jared Powell, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to DeLois Bell for the care she gave to Mrs. Powell.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at the home.
